A Cretan Bucket List

Crete is a beautiful island and the largest of the Greek islands, boasting white sandy beaches and a rich culture. This makes Crete a great holiday destination and there are plenty of things to see and do while you are here. In fact, there is so much, why not create your own little bucket list so you don’t miss out on anything – we’ve started you off with a few suggestions!
Visit the Covered Market in Chania
You can get a true, authentic experience by visiting local markets and trying out the local cuisine sold from the market stalls. The Municipal Market of Chania is a beautiful market modelled on the covered market of Marseilles. You can find plenty of stalls and shops selling everything from fish and meat to cheese and olives. This is a great place to pick up food from when staying in one of our self-catering villas in Crete.
Immerse Yourself in Greek Mythology
Crete is an island famous for its myths and legends – it is the birthplace of Zeus after all! There are a number of sites you can visit which have some connection to Greek mythology, immersing yourself in the culture and history of the island. The supposed birthplace of Zeus is a cave located on the slopes of Mount Ida, making it a great place to visit for any Greek mythology fan. Alternatively, you could visit Kommos which is thought to be the home of the home of the famous King Minos who housed the Minotaur in his labyrinth.
Take a Dip
The waters surrounding the island are incredibly inviting so why not take a dip and take a scuba diving lesson? There are plenty of diving clubs and schools to choose from and you will get the opportunity to see part of the island that many never do!
Sunbathe on Pink Sands
Elafonisi Beach is famous for its pink sands and jewel-blue waters. A visit to this beach gives you your own experience of paradise as you sunbathe, paddle in the waters or even build sandcastles! The beach is on the south-west coast of the island and just across the water, you can find Elafonisi Nature Reserve – a small island.
There is no end to the things you can see and visit when you are in Crete, including the many festivals.
