A Guide to the Regions of Crete

The island of Crete is the largest of Greece’s islands and is divided into 4 main regions. Here we give a quick guide to the regions of Crete and the many amazing sights they have to offer.

Chania

The Chania region of Crete is located on the west side of the island. This region is dominated by the glorious White Mountains and it also famous for its numerous beaches, including the fantastic Balos beach, making the Chania region a perfect holiday destination. The capital of this region is the town of Chania which is also well worth a visit; indeed this ancient town is home to a variety of stunning buildings and fine examples of medieval architecture, making a wander round its streets a truly fascinating experience.

Rethymno

Rethymno is the smallest region of the island of Crete and is famous for its stunning mountain landscapes, spectacular beaches, and historic monuments. As well as these beautiful natural landscapes the region is also renowned for its charming historic villages and bustling towns. Its capital, also called Rethymno, is undoubtedly one of Crete’s most delightful towns and is full of character, from its amazing architecture, to its rich culture.

Heraklion

Located on Crete’s stunning north coast, Heraklion is the largest of Crete’s regions and is one of the most popular destinations on the island. The region is home to a number of great archaeological treasures including the Minoan palace of Knossos. The city of Heraklion is also the largest on the island of Crete and is one of Greece’s major urban centres. This historic city has a number of sights worth exploring, including its many wonderful museums.
