Fisherman's House
C category - Sleeps 2/4
This red-roofed Cretan villa offers romantic seclusion and superb views. The house has a spacious veranda from which to admire Souda Bay and an enchanting garden of fruit trees - orange, apricot, plum and nectarine - and a sitting-out area shaded by vines.
It is within easy walking distance to a secluded sandy beach and a small jetty offers opportunities for fishing. The pebble beach in front of the house is ideal for a morning swim after breakfast and this beautiful stretch of water is popular with locals during the summer months. In off peak season, April and May, plus October, this small beach is often deserted.
Downstairs: are twin beds beneath a Cretan galley with a low wall and curtain divide. On the other side is the kitchen, bathroon with shower and dining area.
Upstairs: on the gallery is a double bed reached by an open, steep wooden staircase (not suitable for elderly, infirm or very small children).
There is a small apartment below the property used from time to time by the owner and his wife.
Taverna and cafe 1 mile walk (uphill) at the small hamlet of Kalami. The larger coastal village of Kalives, with its tavernas, beautiful sandy beach, shops, supermarket, bank and post office, is just 5 minutes drive away.

“Had a really great time in Crete – Fishermans House was fab and we would both definitely return. Pure Crete was great to deal with and it would be a pleasure to book any future holidays to Crete with them. Mrs B – Hertfordshire.
"The quiet seclusion of Kalami was like having our own private beach, the food and the welcome at the Vigla Taverna...was lovely, and with Kalives just a five-minute drive away for anything else we needed, I'm afraid we didn't stir ouselves to get out and about as much as we'd planned at the outset.." Mr and Mrs Mulligan, Oxfordshire. April 2010 |

Choice Magazine 'true Greek food'
There is no better place to taste true Greek food than in the village tavernas, like Taverna Vigla in Kalami. It epitomises Cretan hospitality, with excellent hosts and traditional dishes: spicy meat balls, stuffed vine leaves and the deliciously sweet baklava.
You will have plenty of opportunity to exercise, for Crete is a place for walkers. There are archaeological sites like Aptera, dating from Minoan and Roman times. The walk to tackle is in Samaria Gorge on the southern coast. The gorge is a 16 kilometre (10 mile) hike on a rocky terrain and is mostly downhill and absolutely beautiful with a wealth of plant and animal life. The steep sides are a floral display of Cretan ebony, while the Cretan cyclamen thrives in the woodland and orchids grow cistus bushes and peonies. Migrant birds such as the orphean warbler and redstart and the occassional vulture are there if you look hard. |
