'Greece's most southerly island, Crete is rich in both natural attractions - mountains, beaches, gorges - and historical sights - Knossos and Phaestos and the people: occasionally fierce and unpredictable, always hospitable.'

'I revisited the village where I had spent a winter nearly 30 years ago. Those had been harsh days. There was limited electricity and the houses were cold. For warmth we gathered in the local cafeneion, watching the village's only black-and-white television. Of the two channels, one was devoted to armed forces propaganda. The villagers' faces were dour and strained.

That cafeneion is still there, as are the old houses I remembered (though not, alas, all the villagers). They have been joined by a dozen or so rooms for rent, a clutch of tavernas, an internet cafe and a small hotel. However, black-clad women still call to their grandchildren in the streets; old men still roll dice in the cafe; while the young people - both male and female - now make a volta through the village at sunset. There's a sense of modest advancement, moderated by tradition. I sat with my Greek island essentials - a glass of ouzo, another of water; a plate of olives, a view of the sea and sky - and exulted.
