Maza village

Small village in Western Crete

Maza

Maza is a small village of just 100 inhabitants in the foothills of the White Mountains, surrounded by lush fertile valleys and wonderful views towards the mountains. Half way between Chania and Rethymnon. Maza has a friendly cafeneon village square perfect for people watching in an evening – and a small Byzantine chapel containing frescoes dating back to 1326.

The village of Vrisses famous for its local sheep’s yoghurt and riverside shaded tavernas is just a 5-minute drive away and the Sandy Blue Flag beaches of Giorgopoli just 10 minutes away by car. The historical town of Chania with its beautiful Venetian harbour is 40 minutes to the west, while the town of Rethymnon is 30 minutes drive East. The archaeological sites of Knossos and Phaestos are just over an hour’s drive from the village.
