  • We climbed to Aptera, a town dating from the 5th century BC with substantial ruins - Roman cisterns, a classical Greek theatre and temple. On the very edge of the hilltop was a crumbling Turkish fort. From here must be the most stunning views across the Bay of Souda and the Akrotiri peninsula ,and to the fortified island at the mouth of the bay. Legend has it these islands were formed after a musical contest between the Muses and the Sirens. Defeated, the Sirens plucked off their wings and flung themselves into the sea to become islands. Siren’s offers breathtaking views across Souda Bay over its garden and pebble beach in front and is just a stone’s throw to the small sandy beach at Kalami.

Sirens’ stands alone and is a traditional Cretan house which is both a romantic retreat and a family house of great charm. Its stone construction means it is cool in the summer and retains its warmth during Spring and Autumn evenings when visitors can take advantage of the Cretan fireplace.

The house is spacious and comfortable. The double bedroom on the first floor has air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom and the twin bedroom downstairs also with air conditioning has an adjacent bathroom. Sirens’ commands outstanding views which can be enjoyed from inside or from in its own garden and sitting out areas ideal for family dining or relaxing and sunbathing. The pebble beach in front is ideal for swimming and relaxing at all times of day and the sandy beach, with a jetty from which to plunge, is only a few hundred yards away.
