Villa Roussa is a charming traditional stone built Cretan house with its own private swimming pool that is ideal for both family holidays or as a romantic hideaway for couples. Offering views over open countryside the house has been renovated with the support of Pure Crete and is set in the peaceful village of Maza, in the foothills of the White Mountains of North Western Crete.
A new addition to the Pure Crete programme, Roussa has been beautifully recently restored by its village owner who has decorated and furnished it in the same style as its sister house which is the same village nearby - Villa Maza which is 5 minutes away.
Its idyllic rural location makes an ideal base for those wanting a taste of village life with the local cafenion five minutes walk away offering a choice of traditional dishes and village wine. Within a 10 minute drive away are nearby beaches, tavernas and shops at Giorgiopoli and the freshwater Lake Kournas which offers swimming, pedalos and a choice of restaurants. The historic harbour towns of Rethymnon and Chania are also easy striking distance.
Downstairs this stone-built family house has beamed ceilings and tiled floors. The kitchen with washing machine leads through a traditional archway into the living room with TV/DVD, a sofa bed and a Cretan fireplace. There is a bathroom with shower.
Upstairs has beamed ceilings and wooden floors. There is a double bedroom, twin bedroom and a family bathroom with bath. The upstairs balcony runs continuously along two sides of the building and provides ample room to sit or sunbathe with breathtaking views across open countryside and access from each of the bedrooms via French windows.
There is a third double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower, downstairs accessed by a separate entrance.
Outside there is a large patio area with pergola ideal for al fresco dining in front of the house, beneath the shade of the tree or beside the pool. Also a BBQ, free standing, in the grounds. Perfect for entertaining or relaxed family meals.

Maza is small village of just 100 inhabitants in the foothills of the mountains, surrounded by lush fertile valleys and with wonderful views, located half way between Chania and Rethymnon.
Costas and Voula own and run the friendly cafeneion (cafe/taverna) in the sleepy village square, within walking distance to Villa Roussa. Perefct for people watching in the evening. Daily Specials, cooked by Voula, are served ,including fresh salads, vegetable dishes and meat or fish off the grill as well as a selection of drinks. You will receive a warm welcome here.
Opposite is the small Byzantine chapel of Saint Nikolas which contains frescoes dating back to 1326, Costas at the cafeneion is the keyholder and he will be happy to show you the chapel’s beautiful interior. This quiet village location is just 5 minutes’ drive to the facilities of the small town of Vrisses and 10 minutes to the sandy beaches of Georgioupolis.

5. Apokóronas Village Houses, Crete
The green, hilly Apokóronas region of western Crete is conveniently handy to Haniá airport, and town . We especially like Próvarma village and its Aliki’s House (for up to five), and Villa Aloni (similar capacity, with pool) in tiny Máza hamlet. Many properties have Wi-Fi and are available from late March – both unusual traits for rural Greek villas. Pure Crete offers both flight-inclusive and accommodation-only prices for those preferring to make their own travel arrangements.
Aliki’s House from £803, Villa Aloni from £1,237 (01444 880444;purecrete.com). MD
