If you’re planning on travelling in Crete and not sure if you’ll be able to fit in, we’ve put together some top tips to help you out.

 Crete

Know the History

Understanding the history of the place you are travelling to is essential. Crete has a very rich history, at it was the centre of the Minoan civilisation, which as it stands is still the earliest recorded civilisation in Europe. Bits of history can be found all over the island – so get yourself out and about to explore!

Understand the Culture

Culture is what defines a country.  Crete is widely celebrated for its poetry and music. So, if you a great admirer of both these things, then you will love experiencing everything that the island has to offer. Fish, fruits and vegetables, so if you’re avid fan of olives then you are going to love Cretan food.

 Learn the Language

As Crete is a Greek tropical island, the official language of Crete is Greek, although English is widely spoken. It’s always easier to learn some basic Greek to help you get around the island. It’s not necessary to enjoy your holiday, but the local people will appreciate the fact that you have tried!

Support the Local Communities

Why not take part in a local festival or charity? There are the many yearly events such as the Matala Fesitval, and the Houdetsi festival which is a four-day celebration of Greek music.  The more you take part in their celebrations, the more you will understand their culture. Try to embrace the Cretan way of life whilst your there – it’s a lot of fun!
