Rethymno
A beautiful Venetian harbour town , Rethymno lies 50 miles west of Heraklion and is the third largest town in Crete though retains a laid-back atmosphere. Dominated by a Venetian fortress, within the town’s walls are a beautiful waterfront, lined with numerous tavernas.
Behind this is the Old town with its maze of narrow streets, picture postcard alleyways, shops and cafes. Rethymno has been an intellectual and cultural centre for many years and today is home to the Islands esteemed university as well as housing many museums and galleries. The town also boasts a wide sandy beach and a pretty palm fringed promenade. Popular in the summer months, Rethymno also hosts many festivals celebrating Cretan Food, Wine and Music.
