Last time, we looked at a traditional Cretan Christmas bread, which sounds absolutely delicious, but what about the important matter of Christmas Day dessert? We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite traditional Cretan desserts that would be great to try at home, or on a Christmas holiday in Crete.

Xerotigana

These delicious little treats consist of eggless dough that is stretched out to make them as thin as possible. They are then made into a spiral shape and dropped into hot oil until golden brown, before being submerged in a honey and cinnamon syrup and topped with crushed walnuts and sesame seeds.

Melomakarona

A traditional Christmas cookie, these are flavoured with orange and brandy, dunked in sweet honey syrup, and then topped with chopped walnuts. In short, these cookies really taste like Christmas.

Kalitsounia

These are sweet cheese pastries and are made up of rolled dough that can be baked or fried. Although they are a Christmas tradition, they are also eaten at other times of the year as they’re just so delicious!

Koulourakia Christouyennon

These yeast sesame cookie rings are wreath-shaped and are made with cinnamon, cloves and orange – some great Christmas flavours. These cookies are also great for everyone at Christmas time as they don’t contain dairy or eggs.

Kourabiethes

These cookies aren’t just for Christmas; they are eaten at celebrations too, including weddings and baptisms. These are similar to shortbread, but are packed full of almonds and cinnamon, before being coated in confectioners’ sugar.
