The island of Crete is a treasure trove of marvellous beaches, bewitching landscapes and historic gems. All this and more makes Crete the ultimate holiday destination.

The island itself is split into four main regions, each of which has its own unique allure. But here we thought we’d take a closer look at one of these particular – the charming prefecture of Chania.

Located in the west of Crete, Chania is the most popular holiday spot on the island. Its dramatic scenery, charming culture, beautiful beaches and lavish history, together make Chania a place like no other.

Intrigued? Then let’s explore some of the top attractions Chania has to offer.

Discover the City of Chania

With its picturesque harbour, ancient narrow streets and fascinating architecture, Chania Town – the region’s capital – is Crete’s most enchanting city.

This vibrant metropolis has an amazing atmosphere, and – thanks to the rich culture and traditions of Crete’s biggest, and perhaps oldest, city – it’s all too easy to lose yourself in the feel of the place.

The city consists of two towns – one old and one new. Both of these have plenty to offer. But the true heart of Chania lies in the old town, with labyrinthine streets and alleyways that are steeped in history.

Remnants of the citiy’s Venetian and Turkish past are clearly reflected in the beautiful architecture. A particular highlight is the magnificent Venetian harbour, which runs along the city’s arresting waterfront.

If you fancy finding out more about the intriguing history, then head along to the Archaeological Museum. Housed in a former Venetian church, this museum is well worth a visit.

The exhibitions here will take you on a journey through Chania’s ancient cultural history, from the Neolithic period right through to Roman times.

Chania offers a delightfully eclectic shopping experience. And you’ll find everything you need from the usual souvenirs, to traditional wares made by local artisans. The markets are also a real treat, and here you can sample the delights of fresh local produce. Delicious!

The city is one of the most photographed in Greece too, so you might want to have your camera at the ready for the abundant photo opportunities on offer.

Hit the Beach

The Chania region cannot be beaten for its fantastic assortment of beaches. From small secluded coves, to vast stretches of sand that reach as far as the eye can see, you really will be spoilt for choice.

Some of the island’s best beaches can be found in this region, including the much-loved Elafonisi beach. This small islet has a real paradise-like feel, thanks to its pink-tinged sands and crystal-clear waters.

Other popular beaches in Chania include Balos beach, a stunning lagoon that’s a haven for beach lovers, thanks to its soft white sands, turquoise waters and wild, exotic beauty.

Conveniently located only a few minutes’ walk from Chania Old Town, is Nea Chora beach. This long, sandy beach is very family-friendly due to its tranquil, shallow waters, which are popular with tourists and locals alike.

If you fancy something a little quieter, then a little further along the coast you’ll find a wealth of hidden gems too; beaches where you can simply escape from it all.

Take a Hike

The Chania region is also home to one of Crete’s most popular attractions, the Samaria Gorge. Located in the spectacular White Mountains, the Samaria Gorge is the longest in Europe, famed for its rugged natural beauty and bountiful wildlife – many of which are native to Crete.

The Samaria Gorge National Park offers plenty of opportunities for walking, allowing you to discover its many wonders on foot. But be warned, a good pair of hiking boots are a must!

These are just a selection of fantastic things to see and do in the charming region of Chania. If this sounds like the ideal holiday destination for you, then here at Pure Crete we can help.
