Crete – Through the Lens

2nd March 2019

As one of the most beautiful places on earth, Crete is the perfect destination to visit if you are a budding photographer. There’s nothing that quite beats the blue skies and equally blue waters to create a stunning image that you can take home and display ever so proudly on your living room wall. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be the next Ansel Adams or Annie Leibovitz, make sure you pack your camera for your holiday to one of the most picturesque locations on earth.

Lake Kournas

This breathtaking view is located just outside of Chania. Due to the change in lighting throughout the day, you can get a whole variety of photographs depending on whether you visit at dawn or dusk. If you visit during the summer months, you will find that the water level drops to expose a white sand beach that circles the lake, so this could make for some great photo opportunities.

Dikteon Cave

Legend has it that this cave was the hiding place chosen by Rhea to conceal Zeus from his child eating father, so it’s bound to be pretty impressive. Not only does it have some stunning views inside the cave, the view from outside is breathtaking as it sits atop the Lassithi Plateau. Grab your camera and make sure you get shots inside and outside these awe-inspiring caves.

Old Venetian Port – Rethymno

This beautiful port offers an excellent backdrop to any photograph. The old lighthouse provides a great subject to play around with, so experiment a little to get that perfect shot. During the summer, the port will be filled with tables and chairs as the restaurants open up for tourist season, so if you want your photos to be free of the sun-seeking crowds, visit during the winter months.

Mount Ida

Also known as Psiloritis, this is the highest mountain on Crete, so it provides some breathtaking views. There are plenty of different shots you can achieve depending on how you choose to capture it. For a pretty photo opportunity, you could shoot the small stone chapel located at the summit of the mountain. Alternatively, get some beautiful scenery shots as you approach the mountain.

Red Beach – Matala

The red beach is so named due to its reddish sand. This combined with the blue-green waters makes for a stunning view. Not only are the landscapes perfect for photographing, there are also many carved rocks scattered around the beach. They may look like ancient carvings, but they were actually carved in the 90s by an eccentric nudist named Gerard!

The beauty of this ancient archaeological site doesn’t just lie in its aesthetics, but also in its rich history. According to Greek mythology, the palace was designed by Dedalos with such complexity that no one inside would ever be able to find their way out of it. This is where Theseus is said to have killed the Minotaur, so walking around the ruins you really get a feel for the legends surrounding the palace.
