“The best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much to be resting yourself, as to see all the other fellows busy working.”

Kenneth Grahame

When you go away on holiday the order of the day should always be the maximisation of relaxation; holidays are an escape from everyday life and the stresses that come along with it. Despite the aim of the game being relaxation us Britons do seem to find it very hard to actually switch off and allow ourselves to relax.

One of the major factors in being able to relax is actually leaving things behind; when packing we burden ourselves with all sorts of things that really are better left at home. In this blog we are going to take a look at five of the things that you should leave behind in order to ensure that you are able to completely relax.

Gadgets

You never hear anyone return from a relaxing holiday and say ‘I’m glad I had all those gadgets to keep me entertained’ and for good reason. Gadgets are also known as home electronics and that is exactly where they should stay, leave them behind and you will open up a new world of discovery in your chosen destination.

Work

Far too many of us continue to do work whilst we are on holiday and it really is a detrimental habit if you intend to relax. If you are a business owner and absolutely must attend to business whilst you are away then strictly limit the time you assign to this. The sight of a laptop by the pool is one of the saddest sights that you can see on holiday, and you really don’t want to let this habit ruin a relaxing time.

Toiletries

Have you ever been to a holiday destination that didn’t sell toiletries? Didn’t think so! Why burden your suitcase with shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste or any other readily available toiletries? Save your baggage allowance and buy them when you arrive. If you have specific requirements or medical items then obviously these should not be left behind, but travelling light is the name of the game.

Jewellery/valuables

Grandmas beautiful pearl necklace, your diamond ring, that designer dress that you cherish, this is just a short list of things that you absolutely should not be taking on holiday with you. If you are to lose something in a foreign country then the likelihood of finding it is infinitesimal, and it is likely to stay lost. A general rule of thumb to follow is ‘if you don’t want to lose it, don’t take it with you’; valuable items can not only be lost but can also easily be damaged as they are moved from terminal to plane.

Your watch

"Holidays are about experiences and people, and tuning into what you feel like doing at that moment. Enjoy not having to look at a watch"

Evelyn Glennie

That timepiece on your wrist may well be a useful organisational tool when working and scheduling, but timekeeping is the enemy of holiday fun. One of the best ways to ensure that you are relaxed on holiday is to leave the watch on your bedside table at home and allow yourself to lose track of time. Far too many of us go away with an agenda or an itinerary and feel disappointed when we don’t quite have time to do it all. There is only one itinerary that you need for your holiday and it should read ‘have fun!’; so long as you are doing that then it cannot be an unsuccessful trip.
