Crete By Foot

30th April 2014

The island of Crete offers visitors a wide range of experiences; cultural, historical, serene and vibrant, and everything in between. One of the best ways to experience the landscape of Crete is on your own two feet; whether you’re an avid rambler or looking for a more relaxed stroll, there really is something for everyone.

The best seasons for walking in Crete are spring and autumn; the days are warm and long enough, with a gentle breeze to keep you comfortable, and there will be plenty of flowers and wildlife to see. In summer, you may find that it gets too warm for comfortable walking at the height of the day; however, you can always choose shorter routes and take your walks in the early morning or in the evening, when it’s a little cooler.

Any of our holiday villas in Crete will provide you with an excellent base for walks; whether you choose to explore the traditional villages of the area, the beaches, hills or valleys, you’ll find a fantastic range within easy reach to suit all abilities. There’s nothing more tranquil than a relaxing walk through beautiful countryside, finishing at a local taverna for a traditional Cretan meal, all taken at your own pace.

One of the most popular walks in Crete is, of course, Samaria Gorge. This is a truly stunning destination, however you do need to be quite physically fit to complete the walk – 13 km through the gorge itself, plus another 3km to return to the car park, and because it’s downhill and over rocky ground it can be strenuous on the knees. If you fancy the challenge, it’s easy to get to, with regular buses running from Chania. If you prefer something easier, there are many other stunning gorges to walk through, such as the Imbros Gorge which is shorter and quicker.

For those who prefer guided walks, we offer a special walking week in both Spring and Autumn; our tour guide Tony Taylor takes you through some stunning areas, exploring foothills, gorges and historical sites on a selection of walks which are leisurely in pace and easy to moderate in difficulty. Spaces are limited for these walks – the spring week next month is already fully booked, but at the time of writing there are still spaces for the autumn week in October.
