Walking and Trekking on Crete

The opportunities on Crete are endless, from gentle hiking of local trails in surrounding villages, to trekking the Samarian Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe. You could use self-guided books and maps, book an organised excursion or be led by a local guide, such as Pure Crete’s Sofia Chapman

• Self-Guided walks

  For the independent walker - there are many opportunities: - perhaps using a local walking guidebook such as The Sunflower Walking in Western Crete Guide, or one of the Discover on Foot Guidebooks that cover Western Crete. Pure Crete also has its own small library of walking maps and guides which you are welcome to borrow during your stay with us.

• Trekking the Samaria Gorge

  A popular way of trekking the famous gorge is to book onto an organised day trip, that conveniently includes your coach and boat transfers with a local pick point. This can be booked locally, operates twice weekly and usually costs around 50 euros per person which includes the entrance to the Gorge. The gorge itself is within the White mountains National park is 16 km in length, a challenging descent over rough terrain of 5-6 hours from Omalos to Aghia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The trek includes dramatic scenery and sometimes sightings of the endemic “Kri-Kri” Cretan goat. Good health and fitness are required and walking boots or sturdy shoes essential.
